The Riddle Behind Destiny
As most people say, there are no accidents in life and that everything happens for a reason. But there’s this existing distinct accident in meeting your someone; a fortunate accident or chance—serendipity. Serendipity as defined by movies. about. com, is the phenomenon of finding agreeable things not sought for such as a natural gift for making useful discoveries by accident. So, how do these fortunate chances in the movie give us an ideal romantic comedy film?
To start with, Jonathan Trager and Sara Tomas, who are both strangers to each other, met by accident at Bloomingdale’s during the holiday season to buy gloves for their respective lovers. Though both happily committed to others, there is this first attraction spark that occurred between them. Sara, a believer of fate, and Jonathan, the pragmatic one, tried to test fate. They split up to know if destiny will bring them back together.
They tried writing Sara’s phone number on a paper but it flew away. So Jonathan wrote his name on a five-dollar bill while Sara wrote on the inside cover of a second-hand book entitled “Love in the Time of Cholera”. They declared that if these items will return to them, then they are really destined for each other. Should we rely on this belief of destiny? There are some people who believe in the idea of destiny and there are some who don’t even believe it.
As I’ve watched this movie, the idea of destiny keeps on bothering me and then I was inspired to solve the riddle behind it, whether this has something to do in meeting someone or it is just something that people created out of their imaginative minds and that it never really existed. I do believe that there is really that one person who is destined for us but if you don’t do anything about it, nothing will happen. In short, you should take charge of your destiny.
When talking about destiny, we could say that it is always associated with chance and choice. Some would say that it’s choice that determines our destiny and some would say that you could find someone by chance. In my opinion, chance is always associated with choice; they are somehow interconnected. Say for example, if you have a chance to do something but then you refused to do it, you intervene with your destiny. With this example, we can say that it’s still your choice if you will let chance do its thing.
The story continued a few years after Jonathan and Sara stopped seeing each other and they believed that they’ve lost each other forever. They are both committed to marry their current partners, but they still haven’t gotten over their fated meeting years ago. So, they tried to search for each other along with their respective best friends. The items that they used to write each other’s name and phone number were returned to them and eventually found each other at the Central Park and formally introduced themselves to each other.
All in all, “Serendipity” is a happily-ever-after story bound with fortunate chances. A movie which easily touched my emotion and make me realized that love is really magical. Magical, in the sense that, the words are really powerful, twisted, sweet and yes, it makes me “kilig”. I want to end my reaction to this movie with a quote from screenjunkies. com—“When love feels like magic, you call it destiny. When destiny has a sense of humor, you call it serendipity”.
