To Be an American
When you learn about other countries and the restrictions that are imposed on them from how they live to where they can go, as for being an American means freedom. I believe that a true American is a person who stands up for things they believe are right, one who fights for freedom. A person who is willing to die for their country. Someone who does not judge other people by their race or color of their skin. There was a time when whites were judging people by color and weren’t treated equal.
As this went on people by color felt that they had no freedom as being accepted but one man stood up and spoke for all. His name was Martin Luther King Jr. He was a pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and later become president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. His philosophy of nonviolent directed of a led march and protests though out the South, to Chicago. King gave a unforgettable speech, “I Have a Dream” in front of 200,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D. C.. “With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discord of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day,” said King. He gave his thoughts of one day where whites and colors will come together as one. From that quote alone he wanted equal rights. King was awarded the Nobel Pease Prized.
After giving that speech colors and whites came together like brotherhood. Then the down fault of this was King was assassinated on April 3, 1968. He showed good leadership and fought for other’s freedom. America is a very successful country made up of the best the world has to offer you can come here with nothing but the shirt on you back and end up a millionaire. Being an American citizen means contributing all you can to the society of our great nation. Embracing and utilizing all of their rights while keeping others’ rights in mind as well.
A good citizen cares about the welfare of America and does their best to make a difference, by doing things as simple as voting to working harder to feed, clothe, and shelter the poor. Being a great American citizen always take pride in your nation and be willing to make great sacrifices, just like our founding fathers did. American citizens should always remember what our ancestors went through as immigrants and keep their spirit alive through our actions. In conclusion, being an American is everything.
