Why Is Reading Important
Imagine a child who longs to go to school but cant because they have to walk ten miles to fetch water. Imagine a child who knows they will grow up in poverty, and will never escape its clutches. Imagine a child who dreams of becoming a teacher or a doctor, but doesn’t even know how to read. These Images are real, and they are the reality for some kids today. The motivation and the desire to learn and to read is there for these children, but sadly, the freedom of education is not. Unfortunately, for many kids in todays generation, the freedom of education is taken for granted.
Kids dont want to read In their spare time, they dont want to go to school, they don’t want to graduate. The motivation Is gone. Well, I’m here to tell you that reading Is the most important thing you can spend your time doing! Getting an education is one of the best things you, as a young person, can do for yourself to ensure you lead a better, more fulfilling and prosperous life. Kids, I know you’d rather spend your time texting, Facebooking, or video gaming , but after youVe read this essay, you’ll stop “lol”lng and start reading!
First and foremost, reading leads to academic excellence. What I mean is, the more time you spend reading, the better student you will be, and the better grades you will get. You’ll be the Albert Einstein of your class! I mean, you have to read In all the subject areas, even In math! How do you expect to analyze word problems, understand the scientific method, or determine the causes of the Civil War if you cant read? I know you might be thinking that in our electronic age, it’s easy to lust let technology do the work for you.
Books take too long, you have to sit still, it’s not exciting. But the Internet won’t do your science project for you, or write your history paper, or Introduce you so vividly to the world of Harry Potter. only reading can do that! Surely you can see why kids need to put down the Wii and pick up a novel! In addition to leading to academic excellence, kids who spend more time reading will have more opportunities and will earn more money than those who spend more time In front of the television. I know that money isnt everything, but It oesnt grow on trees!
People need money to survive, to thrive, and to grow. I witnessed my parents constantly reading, trying to better themselves, trying to better our lives. My dad worked like a dog to get through high school, college, and finally law school, and he was able to provide our family with a great life because he spent more time reading and studying than he did goofing off Reading truly led him to a successful life. Which is why, without a doubt, you’ve got to see that reading is the key to unlock the world! Last but certainly not least, reading is actually fun!
I know, I know, how can I put those two words In the same sentence? But hear me out! Reading allows kids to use their imaginations, to travel to distant lands, to realize unfairness and injustice in the world, to discover new technologies, or to set goals for themselves. For example, while reading about Neil Armstrong, a child might discover that they want to be an astronaut, or a soldier, and that book was the Inspiration! I know that the first time I read the Diary of Anne Frank I realized how powerful iterature truly was.
I was in the fifth grade, and was completely stunned that Anne was an actual person who spent two years in hiding, only to be sent to a concentration camp. And all because she was Jewish. I had no idea that those kinds of injustices existed in the world, that world leaders could be so hateful, that people could turn a blind eye to what was going on under their noses. I discovered all of that through the power of reading! Reading truly changed my life, and it can change yours too!
As you can clearly see, reading is not only important, but it is vital to surviving this global economy. The world is getting bigger, faster, and smarter by the minute, and the only way to keep from getting trampled, is to read. Everyday. It’s a simple solution to a huge problem with todays generation, and I challenge you to put down that TV remote, and pick up something to read. Could be a newspaper, magazine, novel, or cookbook, Just pick something up and read it! It’s not a risk, it’s not a gamble, it’s a surefire way to a better life!
